Defying Cancer for 20 Years
Annual Fitness Retreat 2015
February 6, 7 and 8
What is the TSNW annual retreat?
The retreat is an amazing weekend for all women cancer survivors and women living with cancer. It’s a time when women make new friends, renew old acquaintances, learn the latest in cancer research, and try new exercises and activities. Most of all, it’s YOUR weekend. You can participate as much or as little as you want. There will be group activities, breakout sessions, panel discussions, time to relax and chat, and an opportunity for a beach bonfire and more.
What time does the retreat start and when does it end?
The retreat starts on Friday, February 6th. Check in begins at 3:30 p.m. (in Building 225 Dorms) and a few classes on Friday. For those arriving by 4:00, we do have two classes; for those arriving later, we will also have drop in activities that run from 4:00 to 5:30. Dinner is served at 6:00pm. Some may choose to arrive on Saturday. Saturday check in is between 7:30 – 8:45 a.m. with the welcome at 8:00 a.m. (in Commons Main Building) and programs beginning at 8:30.
Where is the retreat this year?
Once again we will be holding the annual fitness retreat at Fort Worden, located at 200 Battery Way, Port Townsend, WA 98368. Port Townsend is on the northeast corner of the Olympic Peninsula. Specifically, the Team Survivor Northwest retreat will be held in three buildings at Fort Worden; 204, 225, and the Commons.
What are the accommodations like onsite?
Building 225 is where all lodging is located. It is also where a couple of breakout sessions, early bird activities, and Saturday evening festivities will take place. Building 225 is two stories tall. It does not have an elevator to the second floor. It is about 1 block from the Commons and 1.5 blocks from building 204. There are 69 rooms with single beds. The remaining rooms have 2 single beds each. All buildings are designated as non-smoking areas. Fort Worden has a park-wide noise curfew of 10pm.
Should I bring my own bed linens?
The beds are twin-sized and linen service is provided, but it is strongly suggested you bring an extra blanket or two if you sleep cold (or a sleeping bag). Bathrooms and showers are dorm style, but with separate stalls for privacy. You may want to bring shower shoes.
Where do we have our meals?
We will eat in The Commons: Company A. The Commons is a dining facility with separate conference rooms. Team Survivor Northwest will be utilizing the conference room called Company A on both Saturday and Sunday. Company A is where presentations to the entire group will take place as well as select breakout sessions.
Where do I park at Fort Worden?
There is ample parking behind building 225. Overflow parking is in front of building 225. All registered overnight attendees will be given a temporary parking pass for the duration of the retreat. Any participant attending the conference just for one day NOT staying in overnight accommodations will be required to have a day-use parking pass ($10) or an Annual Discover Pass ($30 and is good for any WA state park). Parking passes can be purchased on site in the office.
Is there wireless or cell phone coverage at Fort Worden?
Fort Worden’s cell phone coverage is spotty. It’s gotten better over the past few years, but be prepared. Pay phones are located at every building. In case a family member or friend needs to contact you while you are attending the retreat, encourage them to leave a message on all of the following phones. We will check for messages periodically. TSNW Contacts onsite: Maggie Brower 425-830-3209 or Brenda Frost 206-790-6110. TSNW Office in Seattle: 206-732-8350 Fort Worden Park main office: 360-344-4400
What should I wear to the retreat?
You should dress comfortably for the weekend. If you are participating in classes on Friday, note the attire required and be prepared. Many people wear workout clothes with layers on top, Bring shoes you would use for fitness activities. The weather is unpredictable but normally we see a little rain, sun, and wind. Come prepared for NW winter weather!
What should I bring to the retreat?
Bring whatever you need to stay comfortable. Basic bedding and towels are provided. We suggest the following items:
Are the meals onsite friendly to special diets?
YES! The meals are amazing at Fort Worden. Fort Worden can accommodate vegetarians and vegans. There is a full salad bar at lunch and dinner in addition to a great variety of great food.
Is alcohol allowed at Fort Worden?
Yes, alcoholic beverages are allowed onsite. We will not be served alcohol with meals but you are welcome to bring beverages of your choice for after hours. In years past we were under the impression that this was not allowed, however, this is incorrect. If you would like to pretend you didn’t read this and still ‘sneak’ it in, we won’t tell. J
Can I carpool to the retreat with another member?
What a great idea! You will have the opportunity to note you would like to carpool when selecting your classes and activities. We have volunteers who will be setting up carpools to/from the retreat.
Are scholarships available this year?
We are happy to be able to offer both full and partial scholarships on a first come, first serve basis. Please only apply if you are in need of support to come to the retreat.
Can I sponsor a survivor to attend the retreat this year?
Yes, there is an option to sponsor a survivor with either a full or a partial scholarship. You can do this on the website where you would register for the retreat.

We have a fun weekend planned with everything from Recess for Adults, yoga, foam rolling, stretching, fitness apps, walks, hiking and more! The committee strives every year to bring back favorites and add new activities to keep things interesting.
